Shopping can be a fun and exciting experience, but it can also be confusing if you don’t know the right words to use. In this lesson, we’ll be teaching you some of the most important shopping vocabulary words so that you can shop confidently and know what you’re buying.

If you’re like most people, you probably don’t always have time to learn new words. But that’s why we’ve put together this list of shopping terms that you’ll need to know if you want to shop smart and save money.

Clothes Terms

Bag: A large container made of cloth, paper, or plastic, used to carry clothes, groceries, or other items.

Baggy: Describes clothing that is too large or loose-fitting, or that has a sloppy appearance.

Belt: A piece of material, typically leather, that is used to fasten a skirt or pants.

Button up: To close a shirt or blouse with a button at the neckline.

Coat: A heavy, outer garment, usually made of wool, cashmere, or other warm materials.

Denim: A sturdy, cotton twill fabric, often used for jeans, overalls, or other pants.

Dress: A style of clothing that is intended to be worn to a formal event, such as a wedding or a funeral.

Earrings: Earrings that are worn in the ears.

Hoodie: A heavy, hooded sweatshirt.

Jeans: A type of pants, made of denim, that is popular among men and women.

Knee-length: Describes clothing that is just below the knee, typically worn by women.

Long-sleeved: A type of clothing that is worn over the shoulder and down the arm, often made of cotton or other soft materials.

Pants: A type of clothing that covers the whole leg from the ankle to the top of the foot.

Shorts: A type of clothing that covers the lower part of the leg, from the knee to the ankle.

Sunglasses: Sunglasses that are worn on the face.

T-shirt: A type of clothing that is made of cotton, polyester, or other synthetic materials and is usually short-sleeved.

Tag: A piece of fabric or paper that is sewn onto the inside of a garment and that identifies the maker and the size of the garment.

Sale: A sale is a time when a store discounts its items. Sales usually happen every few weeks, and they can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

Department: A department is a part of a store where different types of items are sold. Department stores usually have different sections, such as clothing, food, and home goods.

Discount: A discount is a reduction in the price of an item. Most discounts are given in increments of 10%, 20%, or 50%.

Return: When you return an item, you’re essentially giving the store your old item and you’re receiving a new, unused item in its place. Returns are usually free, but some stores charge a small fee.

Budget: A budget is a guideline for how much money you should spend on different items. A budget can be created by you or it can be suggested to you by a store.

Storebrand: A store brand is a type of product that is made by a specific store. Store brands are usually cheaper than products made by other brands, but they may not be as good quality.

Voucher: A voucher is a piece of paper that gives you a discount on an item. Vouchers are usually given out in increments of 10%, 20%, or 50%.

Salesperson: A salesperson is someone who works at a store and helps you find the items that you need. Salespeople usually have extensive knowledge about the store’s products and can help you find the best deals.

Department store: A department store is a type of store that specializes in selling different types of items. Department stores usually have different sections, such as clothing, food, and home goods.
