A2 Level of English

A2 level of English is the second-lowest level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It is typically aimed at students who have completed A1 level and are working towards reaching B1 level.

At the A2 level, students will be able to understand basic phrases and expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).

They will also be able to communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.

Writing at the A2 level will be limited to very short, simple notes and messages. Students who have reached the A2 level should be able to interact in a simple way provided the other person is prepared to repeat or rephrase information at a slower rate of speech and help with vocabulary.

A2 level students will also have some difficulty understanding fast speech and will need time to assimilate new vocabulary.

Reading skills at the A2 level are limited to very short, simple texts on familiar topics that contain high-frequency, everyday, or work-related language.

A major focus at this level is to develop students’ ability to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.

Achieving the A2 level signifies that the student has acquired the skills necessary to cope with basic survival needs in an English-speaking environment. This level is often used as a stepping stone toward reaching the next level: B1.
